RESUMO

Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the most important reason of mortality into worldwide. Visfatin is a novel adipokine which was reported increased in metabolic syndrome and obesity. Moreover, it is known that visfatin increases in aterosclerotic endotelial dysfunction. In our study we want to demonstrate how visfatin changes in isoproterenol (ISO) induced MI. Rats were allocated into 4 groups in which each group included 6 rats in this study. 200 mg/kg ISO was administered into rats except control group to induce MI. I. and II. Group rats in 6th hour, III. Group rats in 24th hour and IV. Group rats in 7th day were decapitated. Visfatin was searched in cardiac tissues of all groups by immunohistochemistry stainning. Visfatin and cardiac markers' levels were measured in serum samples. Serum visfatin levels gradually increased in 6th and 24th hour in MI rats compared to controls. In 7th day visfatin levels decreased to control levels. These changes correlated with serum troponin T levels. These findings were supported by immunohistochemistry stainning of visfatin in cardiac tissues. It has been shown that visfatin could be useful in diagnosing MI and may be a biomarker for cardiac ischemia because of increasing in systemic circulation and cardiac tissues in MI like troponins.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate how myeloperoxidase (MPO) G-463A gene polymorphism and enzyme levels varied among patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and multiple myeloma (MM) and to find the relationship between the MPO gene, enzyme levels, and clinical parameters. We studied the sera from 40 healthy volunteers, patients with CLL (n = 34) and MM (n = 28). In subjects with homozygote GG genotype, MPO levels were higher in the patients with both CLL and MM than in the control group. This difference was statistically significant in patients with CLL. In conclusion, homozygote GG genotype is found to be associated with an increasing amount of serum MPO. In accordance with the results of the study, we assess that the increase in the MPO enzyme level in the patient groups with CLL and MM generated bactericidal effects as well as the increased formation of ROP, thus setting off a pro-cell death pathway and playing a role on the pathogenesis of lymphoproliferative malignancies through this mechanism.

RESUMO

Various effects of exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOC) have recently become an important issue because of their widespread use in industry. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of volatile organic solvents commonly used in textile paint industry on free radical levels and the antioxidant enzyme system in textile workers. The study included twenty exposed workers and twenty controls. Blood samples were taken after an overnight fast of 10 to 12 hours. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were studied in serum while super oxide dismutase (SOD) activity was studied in erythrocytes. Statistical analysis was performed using the ANOVA and Kruskall-Wallis analysis tests. MDA and SOD were significantly higher in textile workers than in controls (p<0.01). In contrast, no significant difference was observed between them for TAC (p>0.05).Elevated MDA levels in textile workers may indicate increased lipid peroxidation as a result of long-term exposure to organic solvents, whereas elevated SOD activity suggests that the antioxidant system was activated to counter lipid peroxidation. The results suggest that textile workers occupationally exposed to volatile organic solvents make a risk group and require more frequent periodic examinations.
